Easy Venetian Blinds Cleaning: A Step-by-Step Guide

Venetian blinds cleaning may be the debate that you and your partner have been dealing with for as long as you can remember. It’s one of the things that we all try to pass to somebody. Blinds seem to be the hardest thing to clean in the house because they have so many little surfaces. I wish it’s very easy like all you have to do is close them and wipe them down. The most important thing with Venetian blinds cleaning is that you get rid of every bit of dust and dirt that sits on them. Here’s a step-by-step guide to make cleaning a lot easier:

1.) Remove or unscrew the blinds from the window. Use the rotating wand so you can position the slates so they are completely open. Now pull the cord on the blinds to draw them up to the top of the window. Remove the tabs that you see at each ends of the blinds and then tilt the top bar upward, pull the entire bar out of the brackets. Some people choose to clean them while they’re hanging but this is not what we call “thorough Venetian blinds cleaning”.

2.) Place the blinds in the bathtub. If you don’t want to use your tub, you can always use a plastic pool. Fill it with warm water, about three quarters of the way full or enough to cover the blinds completely.

3.) Pour one gallon of white vinegar to the water and swish it around with your hands to distribute the solution evenly. Is vinegar effective in Venetian blinds cleaning? It is strong enough to corrode the grime yet gentle enough without eating into the blinds themselves.

4.) Allow the blinds to soak until the dirt has completely disintegrated (about an hour or so). Slightly stir the water so the surface dirt will loosen.

5.) Empty your bathtub or plastic pool and rinse the blinds using cold water. Make sure you thoroughly clean your tub after you get done cleaning the blinds.

6.) Let your Venetian blinds dry outside (during the summertime), you can use a large clean towel to lay them on. During cold weather, you can just pat dry the blinds by using a soft clean towel before hanging back on the window.

To avoid dirt and dust from building up, it’s advisable to dust your blinds every week using a duster made of feathers or synthetic materials. If you are more on the OC side, you can do your Venetian blinds cleaning using a tricket. This looks like a squeegee with thongs and you can find it in the cleaning supplies section. Opt for a tricket with sponges on both sides that way you can clean both sides of your blinds at one time.
